From the Steven Colbert Late Show, Dan debuts his new recording Southern Gothic (sounds like it should be a Bill Monroe mandolin number).

He is announced just as "Tyminski"?????  Whassup wid dat?

I like the lyrics, as there is definitely some political commentary going on here, which ( I know we probably are Not supposed to get into here) I may like...
But the music just IMO, sounds a bit like the current new Country disguised with acoustic instruments. Something about the beat and the chorus? I may just be getting cynical about new music anymore. Will listen to more, I like Dan- hell of a musican.

It's certainly not bluegrass.

I've got no problem with that; I'm certainly not a purist-Bluegrass is one of a million things I like to play on the guitar and I think the same is true with Dan
Just got to let the song grow on me maybe check out a few others

Yeah, I've gotta agree with this regarding the overall feel of, at least, that performance.  I want to hear some other of his songs before I judge.

Is that his permanent band, or just for the occasion?  Didn't know them all, but mandolinist from Blue Highway and Dobro player from Sierra Hull's band (her husband),  others?

Might be a better way to cash in, compared to just playing bluegrass.[wink]

I heard him on Tim Shelton's podcast. Dan sounded super passionate about this album. He said people are calling him a sellout, but this felt more dangerous than just doing what everybody has always known him to do. I think the rebranding was to set it apart from what people expect when they hear "Dan Tyminski."

It's definitely a departure from his usual output, but I'm on board. Like others have said, my tastes run way wider than just bluegrass. There are some superficial similarities to modern pop-country, but listen to the lyrics. NOTHING on country radio sounds like that. Besides, if Dan dressed up like Jason Aldean, sang only Jason Aldean songs, and referred to his new project as "Aldean," he'd still have more integrity in his ear lobe than all those bro-country dorks put together.

Also, I asked Justin Moses (the dobro player in the video, and also indeed Sierra Hull's husband) if he played on the album, and he said Dan had asked him (and the others, I assume) to play for a few events. However, Justin specifically did used to be in the Dan Tyminski Band with Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, and Barry Bales.

I've got no beef with anything Danny does to keep himself in house and home, taters, cornmeal, guitar strings and gunpowder.  Best wishes!  I was just struck by the re-naming to simply "Tyminski".

I still wish Monroe had recorded a mandolin piece titled "Southern Gothic".
